State Senator Kristina Roegner, Chair of the Senate Higher Education Committee, joined fellow legislators to introduce the Advance Ohio Higher Education Act. The announcement was made at a press conference alongside State Senator Jerry Cirino and State Representative Tom Young.
The proposed legislation, designated as Senate Bill 1, aims to enhance academic standards at Ohio's public colleges and universities. It addresses challenges such as changing student demographics, workforce demands, and rising costs.
Senator Roegner emphasized her commitment to ensuring high-quality education in Ohio. "As chair, I am committed to ensuring that our universities are offering the highest caliber education," she stated. She highlighted goals including promoting research and critical thinking, encouraging free speech, nurturing innovation, and rewarding performance. "We want Ohio’s students to be educated…not indoctrinated."
Key provisions of Senate Bill 1 include ensuring intellectual diversity in classrooms and among faculty, protecting free speech for students and staff, fostering open intellectual inquiry, eliminating DEI programming and related spending, requiring syllabus transparency, banning political litmus tests in hiring decisions, prohibiting labor strikes by university faculty, establishing post-tenure reviews, mandating disclosure of donations from affiliates of the People's Republic of China, and increasing trustee involvement in governance.
Senator Roegner further stated the importance of higher education for societal progress: "Higher education is one of the most powerful tools that we have to ensure the continued success and progress of our society."
