Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro Black History Month

Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro | Summit County

For the first day of Black History Month we thought it was fitting to celebrate some incredible firsts in #SummitCounty!

This year, Council President Veronica Sims became the first Black woman to hold the title on Summit County Council and Judge Kani Hightower became both the first Black woman elected to a Summit County Court of Common Pleas - Ohio division and the first Black woman elected to a County-wide position! Furthermore, Rep. Emilia Strong Sykes became the first Congresswoman in decades to represent all of Summit County in D.C. And we would be remiss if we did not mention the groundbreaking leadership of Rep. Tavia Galonski and Sen. Vernon Sykes who continue to represent Summit County in the statehouse.

This month is all about #BlackHistory, but we want to stress that Black History isn't just something to read about in a textbook, it's happening in our sports, our culture, our businesses, and, yes, our government! So, join us as we continue to highlight Black History in our County over the next few weeks and consider attending some local events!
