Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro | Summit County
On this International Holocaust Remembrance Day we stand in solidarity with all those who lost loved ones, suffered, and died at the hands of the Nazi regime. We remember the Jewish people, the Romani people, the LGBTQ+ people, the political prisoners, and other racial and ethnic minorities that were systematically marginalized and exterminated across Europe.
Most of all, we remember that genocide is made possible at first by little acts of cruelty that grow into something gruesome. It is our duty to remember, to learn, and to honor the victims and survivors by speaking truth to each other and opposing hate wherever it festers.
I encourage folks to attend the 35th Annual Holocaust Commemoration and Awards Ceremony organized by the Akron-Summit Holocaust Arts and Writing Contest, and to consider supporting organizations that commemorate the Holocaust, oppose hatred, and spread compassion.
