COLUMBUS— The Ohio Senate has approved Senate Bill 154, sponsored by State Senator Kristina Roegner (R-Hudson), which recognizes the U.S. Space Force within the state's definition of the armed forces. The bill aims to ensure that Space Force members are granted the same benefits and protections as those in other military branches.

Senator Roegner emphasized the importance of this legislation, stating, "This legislation will ensure that members of the Space Force are eligible to receive the same benefits and protections as those in other branches. It will ultimately better the lives of our neighbors who have sworn to protect us."

The Department of Defense expressed its support for the bill during the committee hearing, highlighting Ohio's crucial role in providing support for service members and their families. The Department acknowledged Senator Roegner's efforts, stating, "We are very grateful to Senator Roegner for her interest in addressing this issue." Additionally, the Department noted that Ohio is home to nearly 600 Space Force Guardians and family members, and the provisions of SB154 will help these individuals maintain eligibility for services by aligning the state's definition of Armed Forces with federal regulations to include the Space Force.

Senate Bill 154 specifies that Space Force members and their spouses will be entitled to various benefits, including the right to receive licenses or certificates for practicing a trade or profession, tax benefits, and guaranteed reemployment in civilian jobs if they leave to serve in the uniformed service.

The bill will now advance to the Ohio House for further consideration.
