The Ohio House of Representatives has approved House Bill 14, which aims to align Ohio tax law with recent federal tax law changes. The legislation was introduced by State Representatives Bill Roemer and Heidi Workman.

House Bill 14 will incorporate modifications from the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2023 into Ohio law. This act permits taxpayers impacted by federally declared disasters to deduct personal casualty losses without itemizing deductions and without the usual reductions.

"This is a commonsense, straightforward housekeeping measure that supports taxpayers and improves the tax filing process in our great state,” said Roemer.

Workman added, “Federal tax conformity simplifies the tax code and helps reduce compliance issues for tax filers. It is my honor to spearhead the first bill passed out of the Ohio House this General Assembly alongside my joint sponsor, Representative Bill Roemer.”

The bill now moves to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
