University of Akron Sangwa Named MAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week

University of Akron men's soccer junior Joel Sangwa (Phoenix, Ariz.) was honored by the Mid-American Conference as its Men's Soccer Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.

Additionally, Sangwa was tabbed by TopDrawerSoccer.com to its Men's Soccer National Team of the Week it was announced on Monday.

A goal in the 25th minute (24:43) from Sangwa lifted then 18th-rated Akron to 1-0 MAC victory at Western Michigan on Thursday, Oct. 13. The game-winning goal came off a Zips' restart in which a back-heeled kick from sophomore Jason Shokalook (Erie, Pa.) found a sliding Sangwa from approximately nine yards out in the center of the box for the tally.

Additionally, Sangwa also helped lead a defensive effort that resulted in Akron's second consecutive and then fourth overall shutout of the season.

On the year, Sangwa owns four goals on the strength of six shots, with four falling on goal.

UP NEXT

Akron hosts Cleveland State in a 7 p.m. tilt on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at FirstEnergy Stadium.
