Junior OH Faith Johnson led the Akron Zips volleyball team with 13 kills in a 3-0 setback to Northern Illinois at Victor E. Court on Saturday. The Huskies claimed the rematch by scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-18 for a 2-0 series advantage against the Zips.
Senior OH Teagan Ochaya followed with 11 kills for Akron, while Jayda Young and Ellen Kinnaird added four kills apiece. Baylee Vought and Avery Brown combined for 31 of 36 assists as Vought tossed 17 and Brown delt 14 helpers. Young paced the arial defense with four blocks and Lauren Latka anchored the defense with 11 kills.
Huskies used a balanced attack as Charli Atiemo led NIU with 12 kills, including a game-high .524 hitting percentage. Brianna Scuric, Katie Jablonski, Emily Dykes and Sammi Lockwood added eight kills each. The defense recorded 10 total blocks which were evenly distributed, while Francesca Bertucci posted a team-best 17 digs.
Akron is scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at James A. Rhodes Arena against Buffalo. The Mid-American Conference match is set to start at 6 p.m.
