The 14th-rated University of Akron men's soccer team overcame a second-half deficit en route to garnering a pivotal 3-3 draw at No. 3 Pitt (5-1-1) on Monday (Sept. 19).
The Zips (4-1-2) collected goals from junior Ryan Kingsford (Herne Bay, England) and sophomores Dyson Clapier (Layton, Utah) and Wan Kuzri Wan Kamal (Carbondale, Ill.) in the 10th (9:31), 18th (17:28) and 53rd (52:41) minutes, respectively, to earn the road result.
The Panthers came into the affair on the strength of three consecutive shutouts and had surrendered only three goals all season before Akron's efforts on the evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Senior Renato Kauzlaric (Zagreb, Croatia) intercepted a pass and fed Ryan Kingsford, who found the back of the net at the 9:31 mark to give Akron a 1-0 lead.
• Dyson Clapier extended the Zips' advantage to 2-0 with his third goal of the year in the 18th minute (17:28) off an assist from freshman Ashton Kamdem (West Chester, Ohio).
• The Panthers cut Akron's lead in half as Mohammad Abualnadi headed home a tally at the 43:47 mark.
• Pittsburgh leveled the contest at two with a goal with one second remaining before halftime from Filip Mirkovic.• The Panthers assumed their first lead of the night, 3-2, in the 51st minute (50:05) on a goal from Noah Hall.
• The Zips netted the equalizer at the 52:41 mark when Wan Kamal found the back of the net off an assist from junior Johnny Fitzgerald (Tallahassee, Fla.).
• Less than a minute later a goal from Fitzgerald in the 54th minute (53:23) was disallowed after Akron was whistled for an offsides call.
• The Zips were led by two shots apiece from Kauzlauric, Kingsford and Wan Kamal on the evening.
• Redshirt freshman GK Mitch Budler (Lincoln, Neb.) posted a trio of saves for Akron.
