The University of Akron Overtime Goal Lifts Delaware State Past Akron

A goal in the fourth overtime propelled Delaware State to 13-12 triumph over the University of Akron lacrosse team on Sunday, Feb. 19."The opening weekend road trip that gave us many highs and a few lows, but the momentum and positive energy is going to be the building block for a great season," Akron head coach Christy Mitchell commented.

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The Hornets netted the first three goals of the afternoon before junior Noelle Boyd (Murrysville, Pa.) scored the first of two goals of the game at the 9:09 mark of the first quarter.

• Delaware State extended its lead to 6-1 before Boyd found the back of the net with 4:39 remaining in the opening stanza.

• The Zips posted back-to-back goals from senior Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.) and freshman Sarah Baumer (Rochester, N.Y.) to cut their deficit to 7-4. It marked the first collegiate goal for Baumer.

• Kiefer scored the final three goals of the half for Akron to bring the Zips within one, 8-7, at halftime.

• Kiefer squared the contest at eight with her fifth goal of the day at the 11:49 mark of the third quarter.

• Freshman Macy Vail (Joppatowne, Md.) collected her first career goal at the 6:19 mark of the third quarter before later adding a tally with 6:12 remaining in regulation.

• Akron had a strong fourth quarter with a pair of tallies from senior Kaija Kunttu (Zionsville, Ind.) and one from Vail.

• Sophomore GK Hannah Sanders (Massillon, Ohio) and freshman GK Kylan Rhude (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) each posted five saves in net for the Zips.UP NEXT:Akron travels to battle St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m.
